Birmingham-Southern students
aredoing great things all the time.

Senior Englishmajors

Bisese

CatieGilliland
ofMetaire, La.,
presented scholarlypapers at this
year’s AlabamaModernLanguage
Conference. The conference, titled
“ConvergingCultures: Languages,
Literatures& Identity,”was held
at theUniversityof Alabama.
Bisese’s paper, “Tragedy in Solitude:
EvidenceofGreek Family Sagas in
OneHundredYears of Solitude,”
andGilliland’s paper, “The Things
I’mTold and the Things I Tell:Dante
and Storytelling inVargas Llosa’s The
Storyteller,”wereoriginallywritten
for Professor of EnglishDr. Jane
Archer’sContemporary International
Fiction class. “The studentswere
abighit at the conference,” said
Archer. “Most presenterswere
facultyor graduate students.”
HollieRussell
, a seniormusic
major fromHuntsvillewith a
Distinction inLeadership Studies,
was selected for the 2014 corps
of Teach for America. Shewill
teach secondary social studies in
SouthCarolina starting this fall.
TFA is anational teacher corps
of college seniors, graduates, and
professionals/volunteerswho
commit to teach for two years and
raise student achievement inpublic
schools. This eliteprogram accepts
only around11%of their applicants
each year.
Robert Potts
, a senior business
major fromHomewood, was among
39 studentswho enrolled in the
JanuaryExplorationTerm course
“SeniorCapstones inBusiness.”
The studentsweredivided into
groups for abusiness competition
focusedon creating andmarketing
products to the campus and local
community. Potts’ team customized
business cards, catch-all boxes for
organizing, andnameplates that
show school spirit. The $700profit
they earned from their project,
dubbed “SouthernDeskEssentials,”
was donated toBSC’s SeniorGift
Campaign. “Our final presentations
were given to executives from
aroundBirmingham and the
Southeastwhohave relationships to
the college andwere able toprovide
uswith ‘realworld’ feedback,” said
Potts.
KionaReese
, a sophomore
musical theatremajor from
Chattanooga, chose an
independently-contracted
ExplorationTermproject and
spent fourweeks inNewYorkCity
expandingher knowledgeofmusical
theatre. Her experiences ranged
fromdancing inmultiple studios to
singing for TonyAwardwinners at
the renownedBirdland JazzClub.
