Southern Spring 2014 - page 4

Newbeginningsquite like spring
Spring is always a time to think about newbeginnings, but I have a special excuse this time around.
As Iwrite this, I amnot in theofficeputting thefinal touches on this issueof
’Southern.
Instead, I’m at
homewith abrand-new addition toour family: ourweek-oldbaby.
As I typewithher onmy lap, I can’t helpbut gazedownonher andwonder:Whowill yoube?Howwill
youdiscover your special gifts? What skills and supportwill youneed tobest fulfill your potential?
This, in away, iswhat everyonehere at Birmingham-Southerndoes for eachof our students. When they
arrive their first year, they’renot as innocent as newborns (I suspect even their parentsmight agree),
but they are just as open to an infiniteworldof possibilities. If theywant to shed their high school
identity and try somethingnew, they cando that in a safe residential environment. If theywant to take
their accomplishments to thenext level, they cando that, too, under the guidanceof faculty and staff
committed tohelp themdevelop. Over their four years hereon theHilltop, they’ll discoverwhat excites
them andfigureout how to follow thosepassions andmake themwork in the “realworld.”
In this issue, we explore someof thosepathways. Ourmain feature follows alumni artistswhohave
approached their field frommanydifferent directions and found artistic and commercial success.
You’ll alsofind aphoto essay that follows a groupof studentswhomount aplayduring the January
ExplorationTerm, playingmultiple roles and learning the ins andouts of professional-scaleproduction.
Andof course, you’ll also learn about someof our student and faculty achievements in thenews
sections andfind your old friends and classmates’ own success stories (andbirth announcements!) in
ClassNotes.
There’s onlyone thingmissing: your own story. Please let us knowhowBirmingham-Southern
opened your eyes, propelled you toward your future, or changed your life. You can email us at
. We look forward tohearing from you, andof course, you’re alwayswelcome to
visit us during thebeautiful springtimeon theHilltop.
Forward, Ever!
