and archaeology. Hehas spoken and

anddecorationof reliquary shrines
in the Tuscan cityof Siena. Smith
is a contributing co-editor of the
anthology
Art as Politics in Late
Medieval and Renaissance Siena
,
published in2012. His current bookproject explores
viewer receptionof visual environments created for
threemajor sacred treasures inRenaissance Siena, and
underscores both continuities and innovations in images
employed in the Sienese cult of relics.
DR. KATHLEEN SPIES, PROFESSOR
OF ART HISTORY
Spies, a scholar ofmodern andAmerican art, has published
onThomas Eakins andneurasthenia, onReginaldMarsh,
burlesque andhumor, andWalt Kuhn’s nationalism inhis
portraits of showgirls. Hermost recent research examines
thedevelopment ofModernism in theU.S. through the
work and career of Kuhn, a co-organizer of the famed1913
Armory Show. Shewas selected topresent her findings this
past fall at the Southeast CollegeArt Conference inNorth
Carolina and at theNewberry Seminar inAmericanArt and
Visual Culture inChicago. She is currentlyworkingon a
book-lengthproject on theburlesque and circus subjects of
Kuhn.

DogwoodRegional FineArts Exhibition
inKnoxville, whichwas exhibitedApril
4-26. The annual juried exhibitionwas
developed to showcase and award the
finest emerging and established artists
within a300-mile radius of Knoxville.
This particular portfolioofworkhas
been included in sixprevious juried
exhibitions in four additional states since
August. Venzdeveloped thedepartment’s
multi-facetedphotographyprogram in
1998; her captivatingphotographs have
been exhibited all over the Southeast and
overseas.
