Meal Plan Modifications

Meal Plan Modifications

Students with a medical condition that requires a special diet or services from Dining Services, or who have religious requirements may request a meal plan modification. Meal plan modifications are designed to ensure students have the appropriate dining options based on their situation.

Birmingham-Southern College requires all students to purchase a meal plan and may grant a student a partial meal plan modification for a documented disability, chronic medical condition, or religious dietary observances.

Birmingham Southern College is committed to the full participation of students with disabilities in all aspects of college life, including on-campus dining. Students with food allergies or disabilities who require special diets should consult the information on the Allergies and Special Diets section of the dining services website, and schedule an appointment with the dining services staff to discuss their needs.

Meeting with the dining services staff will ensure that you are aware of the various options for you on campus, and how dining services might be able to meet your individual needs. After a student meets with the dining services staff, if they feel they require a modification of the meal plan, A meal plan modification request form can be submitted to the office of accessibility

The modification to the meal plan will be considered after the meeting with dining services to determine if the requested dietary needs can be met by dining services provided on campus. If the request and needs cannot be met the student should complete the meal plan modification form and provide documentation.

Students should submit documentation to the office of accessibility that explains how their disability impacts their ability to dine on campus and provides accommodation recommendations related to the meal plan by the appropriate credentialed professional.

Please contact the office of accessibility at [email protected] if you have any questions about the process for requesting a meal plan modification. While students may request an accommodation at any time, meal plan accommodations are not approved retroactively, so we encourage students to submit their requests as early as possible.

  • Certain supporting documentation may be required, requests cannot be properly reviewed until this documentation has been provided.
  • Simply submitting the necessary documentation does not guarantee that your request will be approved, as Dining Services may be able to accommodate your dietary needs.
  • Vegan and vegetarian options are offered in all dining locations during all meal periods. Vegan/vegetarianism is not considered a reason for release from the meal plan requirement.

We understand that your health is important to you, and we want to support you staying healthy. We encourage you to communicate with Matthew Jones, the Bon Appetit chef on campus, about food options available to you. He would like to discuss ways Bon Appetit can work to meet your dietary needs/preferences and fully utilize the services available. You can contact Matthew Jones at [email protected] or stop by the Caf and meet with him in person. After your meeting with Mathew, we will have clarity on the ability of Bon Appetite’s ability to meet your accommodation.

Requesting Meal Plan Modifications

To request a meal plan modification, students should:

  1. Provide the appropriate documentation from a licensed or otherwise properly credentialed professional who conducted the diagnostic testing, or an explanation of religious beliefs and reason for the dietary restrictions. Information regarding documentation requirements can be found in the Documentation Requirements for Meal Plan Modifications.

  2. Complete the Meal Plan Modification Request Form and submit a signed copy to the Office of Accessibility. This will be added to any documentation received from the treating professional.

  3. Once documentation and the Meal Plan Modification Request Form have been received, the Office of Accessibility will contact the student to discuss the College’s ability to meet the requested dietary restrictions or if a modification is necessary. As each student and situation is unique, the Office of Accessibility is not able to determine meal plan modifications until all documentation and request forms have been submitted and reviewed.

  4. Meal Plan Modifications are valid for one year and students must resubmit updated documentation each year to receive consideration for modifications.

Decisions regarding Meal Plan Modifications will be communicated to the student in writing via email prior to the beginning of the academic term. The Office of Accessibility will contact the appropriate offices at Birmingham-Southern College to make modifications to the meal plan and if needed, provide reimbursement for meal plan fees already paid.
