Welcome, new students!
We are thrilled you have chosen to join the Birmingham-Southern community. Below you'll find a brief overview of our amazing Orientation programs.
Summer Orientation is a day-long experience focused on the college transition--connecting with your classmates, meeting with a faculty advisor, and reviewing your fall class schedule. While Summer Orientation is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged.
Summer Orientation is offered on three different dates, Friday, June 9, Saturday, June 10, and Monday, June 12. Summer Orientation begins with check-in at 8:30 a.m. in the Norton Campus Center and the day concludes around 3:30 p.m. Please dress comfortably for the day.

We recognize that the start of college is a transition for parents, as well. Therefore, we offer Parent Orientation concurrently with Summer Orientation. While students are exploring campus with their peers, parents get the chance to establish a similar support network--with each other and with multiple faculty and staff members. During this time, feel free to ask the questions you've always wanted to... without fear of embarrassing your student. We are partners with you in your student's educational journey, and you are an essential part of the BSC family.
Additionally, parents are welcome to participate in the afternoon activities associated with Fall Orientation on Friday, August 18, 2017--participating with move-in/check-in activities, meeting with your student's faculty advisor, and attending the New Student Convocation. During the Summer, Parent Orientation begins with check-in at 8:30 a.m. in the Norton Campus Center and the day concludes around 3:30 p.m. Please dress comfortably for the day. If you are able to join us for Summer Orientation, your student will provide your information when they complete the Summer Orientation and Course preference form.
Fall Orientation is a mandatory, five-day experience right before the start of classes. Beginning with New Student Move-In on Friday, August 18, 2017, students are divided into orientation groups of about 10 people and paired with an upperclass Orientation Leader (OL). Your OL will serve as your guide throughout Orientation. Fall Orientation will acquaint you with campus life, help you adjust to the academic rigor of BSC, and of course, build community among your fellow classmates. Orientation has an excellent blending of logistics, information, and the all-important fun.
The schedule for students and parents on Friday, August 18 is as follows:
- 8:00-11:00 a.m. Residential Student Check-in/Move-in
- 1:00-2:00 p.m. Commuter Student Check-In
- 2:00 p.m. Students & Parents meet with Orientation Group
- 2:30 p.m. Convocation for New Students & Parents
- 3:45 p.m. Students & Parents Meet with Faculty Advisor
- 4:30 p.m. Parent Reception/Students with Orientation Group
