Will my degree be recognized as valid after Birmingham-Southern closes?

Yes. You have earned your degree, and nothing will change that. BSC has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on College, which validates the education you received. Your transcripts will show your courses, grades, GPA, and degree earned.

How will I be able to get a copy of my transcript in the future? What about potential employers?

Student transcripts will be available to you after the College closes.  Students may request a copy of transcripts now through July 31, 2024, from the BSC Academic Records Office. Unless the transcript is immediately needed for transfer or enrollment at another institution, there is no need to request the transcript at this time.  Given the volume of requests and the priority on students who are transferring to a new institution; for alumni who request a transcript while the College remains open and are not on the list of currently enrolled students or do not indicate an immediate need for the transcript, there may be a significant delay.

Following July 31, 2024, the College has entered into agreements with Parchment Credentialing Services and the Alabama Community College System. Students may request a copy of their transcripts from either of these entities.  Students who graduated prior to 1983 will need to request transcripts from the Alabama Community College System.  The Alabama Community College System Serves as the custodian of records.  ACCS will provide archiving of all records; ACCS can access records prior to 1983 and will be able to search for records for which the requester has incomplete or incorrect information (e.g., a name changes or alternate spelling).

Can I order a replacement diploma?

Please download the Duplicate Diploma Request Form and return it to the Registrar’s Office by May 31 to order additional or replacement diplomas. Once the records are transferred to the custodian noted above, new processes will be communicated.

Will alumni have a way to stay connected to one another?

We do not yet know how this will occur beyond social media, but we will let our alumni know once there is a plan. To be sure you are on the alumni list, please update your contact information here.

What will happen to the campus after the College closes?

Campus buildings will not be open for public use after May 31 other than the United Methodist Center, which houses the North Alabama Conference. Residents of Greensboro Road will continue to access campus through the front gate.

At some point after May 31, the campus property will be sold and the tangible assets will be liquidated. More information about that will be provided later.

Is BSC still accepting gifts?

Yes, and every gift will help fund a smooth transition for students, faculty, and staff. Forward Ever Day will still happen on Thursday, April 4. After that, BSC will continue to accept gifts through May 31. Gifts during this time are especially helpful. You can give here.

I have made gifts this calendar year and will need a tax receipt for my 2024 tax return. How will I get that document?

We will mail tax receipts to all 2024 donors in June 2024. Please keep that receipt for your files, as the College will not be able to reissue receipts after closure.

What will happen to the endowed funds that were established by donors?

We are working on a plan to manage the remaining endowed funds in a way that honors the intentions of our donors. Once that plan is in place, we will reach back out to endowed fund donors with additional details.

I have included BSC in my estate plan. What happens now?

If you have previously notified BSC of your intent to make a planned gift, including Charitable Remainder Trusts, we will reach out to you directly by mail.

If not, then you will need to revise your will if you were planning on a bequest, or designate a new beneficiary if you were planning to use retirement assets, life insurance, or another means of giving to support the College. Please direct your questions to [email protected].
