2018 STUDENT welcome packet

EARLY ARRIVALS Certain groups are required to move into the residence halls before August 24, including: football, cross country, volleyball, soccer, international students, and designated choir members. If you’re in one of these groups, you’ll get details from your coach and/or program director. COMMUTER STUDENTS If you live at home with family members, you will find numerous opportunities to connect with other new commuter students and your residential peers through Orientation. We offer several specific activities in the fall to ensure commuters get to know each other and form their own community within our larger campus community. You’ll also have exclusive access to the Commuter Student Lounge, located on the first floor of the Norton Campus Center. This space provides a “home away from home” for our commuters to relax, watch television, or study between classes. FALL ORIENTATION Fall Orientation is a mandatory five-day experience that begins on Friday, August 24 after Move-In Day activities have ended and concludes Tuesday, August 28, the day before fall classes start. New students are placed into small orientation groups and paired with an upperclass Orientation Leader and a faculty advisor. Fall Orientation will acquaint you with campus life, help you adjust to academics at BSC, and build community with your fellow classmates. It’s a blend of logistics, information, and, of course, fun! SERVICE IN THE CITY On the Saturday of Fall Orientation, you’ll participate in a morning of service throughout the city of Birmingham. Orientation groups partner with non-profits to tackle a number of critical projects. You’ll have a lot of fun getting to know your classmates and your new home town while learning how you can serve during your time at BSC. In order to participate, you and a parent/guardian must sign the Service in the City waiver, which is included in this packet. You can bring the completed form to Summer Orientation or email it to [email protected]. 8
