How does your support of BSC make a difference?

There are so many inspiring stories of BSC family members who have been and continue to be impacted by the Birmingham-Southern experience and education that your gift helps to provide. See the stories below for an example of how you can support students.

Gabrielle Smith

The first time she volunteered for community service, Gabrielle Smith '91 was just 13 years old. "I was very eager to work and give back to my community, but my mother told me the minimum allowable age for community service was probably 15. So I took the initiative to read through a United Way guide to local nonprofits and found an opportunity at the Red Mountain Museum. Although the minimum age to volunteer was 14, I still called the Executive Director, secured an interview, and this began my legacy of giving back."

And twenty-three years later, Gabrielle is still taking the initiative to give back – this time to Birmingham-Southern: as a mentor through the BSC Panther Partnerships program, as a member of the Norton Board, and as a member of the Black Alumni Affinity Group steering committee...more

Brooke Tanner Battle '96

"I was challenged to be a better leader my very first day of class at Birmingham-Southern," remembers BSC alum and board member Brooke Tanner Battle '96. "At the end of the class, Natalie Davis stopped and addressed all the girls in the room: 'Not one of you raised your hand today. If you want to succeed in my class, you have to talk.'"

"It's hard to measure the impact that one experience had on my career—both during school and afterward. I had been active in leadership roles during high school. But what I learned that day is, part of being a true leader is speaking up when there's something to say."

Founder/CEO of a software startup, Smart Party—following a 15-year career in private equity real estate finance—Brooke has served on numerous local nonprofit boards. However, she's quick to deflect attention from herself in describing what makes her proud to be a BSC graduate...more

Taylor Watts '17-Future Music Therapist

Plenty of people will tell you college changed their lives. Few can say that with more conviction than Taylor Watts. A rising sophomore from Alexandria, Alabama, Taylor was a standout high school defensive tackle recruited to Birmingham-Southern by Coach Garfinkle—a friend of his father's.

"I came to BSC planning to play football all four years, and then become a coach. I was also thinking about studying law after college—because, to be honest, making money was pretty high on my list of priorities."

Today, Taylor is planning to earn a Master's degree in Music Therapy...more
