Birmingham, Alabama

is called the “Magic City” for good reason. It’s small enough that you can get across town in a jiffy, but rich with recreational, athletic, cultural, and entertainment options, from hiking and mountain biking to the symphony, ballet, and art museum, to a thriving music and food scene.

Here are our top 5 ways to make the most out of the Magic City:

  1. Get an internship: Being in the city – and having hundreds of BSC alumni close by – means it’s easy to get hands-on work before graduation. Just a few examples of recent positions held by BSC students:

  2. Crave some culture: Fancy a night at the opera, or the ballet, or the symphony? More of a fan of jazz or blues? Or art, or drama, or films? Check out the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Ballet, Birmingham Opera, a slew of local theatre production companies, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, national touring acts, or even an old-school blues joint.

  3. Head for the hills: Birmingham may be the big city, but it’s got more than its fair share of nature, too. Right in town, you can hike at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, fly on the zip lines at Red Mountain Park, hit the swimming hole at BSC’s own Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, or enjoy the outdoors downtown at Railroad Park. A short drive away is Alabama’s largest state park, Oak Mountain, with miles of hiking and mountain bike trails and a lake for swimming and boating.

  4. Get connected: We’re so serious about service, we’ve made it part of Orientation. Teams of first-year students head out to organizations around the city to help in urban gardens, soup kitchens, and local schools – even before classes begin. And those relationships can last all the way through school, because giving back is a great way to learn.

  5. See the city after dark: We’re just three miles from the center of Birmingham’s night life and some of the country’s best award-winning restaurants. Hop on the free ’Southern Shuttle to do some shopping or head to the entertainment district – it runs 'til midnight!
