Instrumental ensembles:

Symphonic Band

The focus of the BSC Symphonic Band is to increase students' quality of performing on their instrument at a collegiate level. In the Fall Semester, the Symphonic Band spotlights its individuals through the annual Prism Concert. In the Spring Semester, the ensemble prepares major works for winds and percussion to perform on tour, in local venues, or for special occasions. Fine and Performing Arts scholarships are connected to the Symphonic Band and General Band scholarships may also be provided with course credit.

Panther Pride Marching Band

“The Pride” has been establishing itself as an ensemble comprised of leaders and it continues to generate students of remarkable character. The Marching Band supports the College’s athletics at home football games, typically 4-5 per fall term. The Panther Pride Marching Band is one of the best ensembles to begin life-long friendships at BSC. Fine and Performing Arts scholarships are connected to the Marching Band and General Band scholarships are provided to all students enrolled for course credit.

BSC Jazz Band

The Jazz Ensemble performs big band and combo literature from various areas of the jazz repertoire. Students have the opportunity to perform as a soloist in several styles such as standard jazz charts, Latin music, funk, and several types of dance music. This group regularly performs off-campus to represent the College in the Birmingham community. Enrollment is open to all BSC students with prior experience and ensemble credit is available.

Guitar Ensemble

Students in this ensemble work on music written specifically for guitar ensemble and allows students to experience music of great composers who didn't write for the guitar. This ensemble meets twice per week and previous study in classical guitar is required. A recital is planned during the academic year and ensemble credit is available.

The Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra

The RMCO is open to BSC students on a space-available basis. The orchestra performs regularly on campus and throughout central Alabama. Each year, the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra accompanies the winners of the Birmingham-Southern Whittington Competition. Rehearsals are held on Sunday evening in either the Hill Music Building or the Phillips Building at BSC. Students may register for orchestra ensemble credit.

The Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra

Under the direction of Roderick Cox, the ASYO is an ensemble dedicated to giving young musicians the opportunity to learn and grow through the rehearsal and performance of great orchestral music in a highly professional setting. Members of the ASYO work regularly with the musicians and conductors of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and perform concerts spanning from standard orchestral repertoire to pops and chamber music. Audition information can be found here.  Rehearsals are held on Sunday afternoon in the Phillips Building at BSC. Students may register for orchestra ensemble credit.
