"Deciding to study abroad has been one of the best decisions of my life. It is a time to discover so many things, to experience a new culture, to be out of your comfort zone, to prove foreign language skills, to know new people, and even to get to know oneself better."
Amy Sessions, BSC Class of 2012, researched abroad in Finland, studied abroad in Switzerland and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to do research in Switzerland 2012-2013.

Through the Sklenar Center at Birmingham-Southern College, any BSC major can travel overseas and study at foreign universities and institutions in a variety of locations worldwide. Students often return from their time abroad with greater knowledge about their disciplines and a deep desire to share their international experiences.

BSC encourages students to pursue their studies overseas. Study abroad for at least one fall or spring term may fulfill one of three Civic Engagement requirements toward completion of the Explorations curriculum. Pre-approved courses students take abroad count toward major, minor and elective credits. For each semester abroad, students receive three lecture and arts event credits required toward the degree. Summer options are also available for students travelling independently or with a faculty member.

Study abroad students often go on to pursue graduate fellowships and career opportunities that enrich their education beyond BSC. As part of the study abroad experience, BSC encourages students to enhance their knowledge through internships, research, and service-learning. While enhancing your resume with study abroad, students can enrich their overseas experiences by interning in a global company or health care clinic abroad, working alongside research scholars in their field or sharing time with people who make a difference in the lives of others.
