Department of History

 

At BSC, you will be in the classroom with award-winning professors and take a host of classes to satisfy your historical and intellectual curiosity. Our engaging faculty and nationally and internationally recognized scholars are known in various historical fields.

The Department of History offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a concentration in public history, with specializations in American history, European history, women's history, East Asia, World War II and the Holocaust, Southern history and civil rights, and the history of terrorism -- to name a few.

The department also contributes to the Harrison Honors Program, Leadership Studies, Asian Studies, and Pre-Law.

Why study History at BSC?

  • Knowledge. The study of history is an excellent foundation for practically anything you want to do with your life. There is no such thing as studying too much history.
  • Careers. History students enjoy success in law, business, museums, libraries, health care, academia, government, international relations, and non-profit work. History is also a great option for teaching in secondary education.
  • Honors. History majors routinely win BSC's highest academic honors, including the Ikenberry-Turnipseed Scholarship Award, and earn induction into Phi Beta Kappa.
  • Internships. Students may use BSC's E-Term to intern with a local museum or archive, such as the Birmingham Public Library, the Southern Museum of Flight, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, or Vulcan Park and Museum. For more information, please contact Dr. Randall Law.
  • Study abroad. The Hardin-Churchill Archives Centre Endowed Travel Award allows qualifying history majors to study the papers of Sir Winston Churchill at the University of Cambridge in England. For more information, please contact Dr. V. Markham Lester.
  • Research. During the senior year, history majors pursue independent research projects as part of the senior symposium, under the guidance of an advisor, and present research at the senior conference.

    Faculty Expertise

    All of the history faculty members at Birmingham-Southern College have earned the highest degrees in their fields. The department has six professors as well as a lecturer in Classics, who offers courses on ancient Greece and Rome. Class sizes are typically between ten and twenty-five students, ensuring that students receive one-on-one attention and develop strong working relationships with faculty. Our faculty take great pride in helping students craft independent research projects and writing letters of recommendation to graduate programs. 

    Areas of expertise include British, East Asian, Russian, modern European, American, Middle East, modern Latin American, Civil War, and African-American history as well as Women and Gender studies, Asian studies, and American Constitutional and Legal History.
